Integrative Nutrition Counseling

Dr. Jody Garlick is a registered and licensed dietitan who is enthusiatic about helping people who have difficulties with eating and digestion because of symptoms such as bloating, gas, irritable bowel, constipation, acid reflux, brain fog, and loss of energy. Integrative nutrition uses a holistic approach to understanding the root causes of digestive issues to develop a comprehensive plan for finding optimal health again.

Jody will discuss your medical history, eating patterns, and specific symptoms and conditions and collaborate to create a realistic plan to regain your health. She may also provide recipes, meal plans, and other tools or resources to create a customized nutrition plan. Unlimited messaging through an online client portal makes it easy to address issues that can come up between sessions or provide a place to ask quick questions. Nutrition counseling sessions typically last one hour and are conducted only through telehealth.

Follow-up visits are generally scheduled monthly, but may be more/less frequent based on a client's needs. Jody does not participate with health insurance at this time, but is always happy to provide a superbill that can be submitted directly to insurance for reimbursement. All payments are expected at the time of service. Jody is licensed in the state of Pennsylvania, and can also work with clients who live in California, Colorado, Virginia, Michigan, and Arizona.

Sylvotherapy: A Natural Approach to Stress & Gut Health

At South Hills Nutrition, we believe that true wellness goes beyond just what’s on your plate—it’s also about how you nourish your mind, body, and nervous system. That’s why we’re offering Sylvotherapy (Forest Therapy)—a nature-based practice that supports gut health, stress relief, and overall well-being by reconnecting you with the healing power of trees.

What is Sylvotherapy?

Sylvotherapy, or tree therapy, is the practice of immersing yourself in nature to support digestion, mental clarity, and emotional balance. Studies show that spending time in forests can reduce stress hormones, improve gut-brain communication, and enhance immune function—all essential for digestive and overall health.

How Can Sylvotherapy Support Your Gut & Well-Being?

  • Reduce stress & nervous system overload: chronic stress can disrupt digestion and time in nature helps calm the gut-brain axis.

  • Enhances gut microbiome balance: Exposure to natural phytocides (compounds released by trees) supports immune health and microbial diversity.

  • Encourages mindful eating: A relaxed nervous system promotes better digestion, absorption, and appetite regulation.

  • Support detoxification & lymphatic flow: Gentle movement and deep breathing in nature help reduce inflammation and bloating.

What to Expect in a Sylvotherapy Session

Each 2-hour guided session is tailored to the needs of the group and takes place in a peaceful, natural setting on one of the trails at Ohiopyle State Park. You will be led through intentional, science-backed exercises that help regulate the nervous system and improve digestion. Your experience may include:

  • Gentle forest walk and breathwork:

A slow mindful walk to stimulate the gut-brain connection and activate relaxation. Guided breathing exercises to reduce stress and support deep diaphragmatic breathing, which massages internal organs and improves digestion.

  • Grounding & Tree connection practices:

Tree leaning exercise to absorb stabilizing energy and reduce nervous tension. Tree touch meditation to engage your senses by touching bark, leaves, roots, encouraging calmness and focus.

  • Sensory awareness & mindful exploration:

A guided practice to slow down and tune into the sights, sounds, and scents of the forest, which lowers cortisol and supports digestive balance.

  • Silent reflection & integration:

Time to sit quietly, journal, or simply absorb the environment. End with a short guided gratitude practice, reinforcing a sense of nourishment and relaxation.

  • Tea ceremony with light snacks using local wild plants based on the season

Who is This For?

This session is ideal if you experience:

  • Digestive discomfort related to stress

  • Emotional eating or irregular appetite

  • Chronic stress, anxiety, or burnout

  • Low energy or brain fog
